Eucatastrophe was coined by J.R.R. Tolkien to describe a sudden, favorable turn of events that leads to a happy ending, often in the darkest moments of a story. It combines the Greek prefix eu- (meaning "good") with catastrophe (a disastrous event), but unlike a typical catastrophe, it results in a joyous outcome. Tolkien considered it essential in myth and fairy tales, where hope emerges from despair. He even described the resurrection of Christ as the greatest eucatastrophe. A key example is in The Lord of the Rings, when Gollum's unexpected intervention leads to the destruction of the One Ring.
